A retrospective study found that while phenylephrine, compared to norepinephrine, was associated with a statistically significant but clinically minor reduction in heart rate (approximately 4 bpm) in patients with sepsis and atrial fibrillation, there were no significant differences in secondary outcomes. Current sepsis guidelines do not recommend phenylephrine, and this small heart rate difference is unlikely to justify deviating from them.
