A new coding agent, Ajna, demonstrates that significant improvements in performance can be achieved with smaller, freely available language models by focusing on the "harness" – the layer between the model and the tools it uses – rather than solely on model size. This harness absorbs common errors made by smaller models, allowing a 20B model to accomplish tasks previously requiring much larger frontier models. Notably, simply instructing the model to "verify its own work" actually decreased performance with smaller models, highlighting the importance of rigorous, code-based benchmarking to guide development.
